Mandarin Practice
A keyboard-driven, pinyin-first app for drilling Mandarin vocabulary, offline, distraction-free, and built around spaced repetition.
Cram mode drills a batch with a 3-box Leitner system. A word only graduates once you recall it in both directions.
Most language apps bury real practice under gamification and logins, and they make you type Chinese characters, which is a different skill from actually recalling a word. For daily, exam-focused drilling, that friction gets in the way more than it helps.
Mandarin Practice strips it back to focused reps. You type pinyin, not hanzi, so the feedback loop stays about sound and meaning. Six practice modes pull from your own uploaded lessons, an adaptive weighting formula resurfaces the words you miss most, and everything runs locally in the browser: no account, works offline, syncs to the cloud only if you opt in.
- Six practice modes: translate, conversation, tone ID, fill-the-blank, reorder, and an intensive Cram mode
- Two review algorithms: SM-2 spaced repetition for retention and a 3-box Leitner system for cram sessions
- A pinyin normalization pipeline so tone marks, tone numbers, and spacing all resolve to the same answer
- Fully keyboard-driven, with native browser text-to-speech for Mandarin audio
“Typing characters is a different skill from knowing them. Drilling pinyin keeps every rep about sound and meaning, not strokes.”
A production-deployed personal tool that makes daily drilling fast and frictionless. Core matching and cram logic are covered by unit tests, and the local-first design means practice never depends on a network or a login.
